The Value of a Mentor
I recently completed research on women in educational leadership. This is an area of passion for me as a female who experienced specific challenges in this space. As a result of this research, I think it is important to highlight some common findings that can inform others in this space.
Today, I want to focus on the value of a mentor. Throughout my literature review and my own analysis, it is clear that this is a valuable aspect in supporting women’s success. Interestingly, the mentor can be both male or female as long as they contribute as a thought partner and support the goals of the female leader.
Personally, this was an area I struggled to find in my own career. Leadership is an isolating position as we are not always able to engage with others. We may be the only leader in a certain environment. Many others in leadership do not value the collaboration and notion of teamwork as they strive to climb the ladder. For those desiring the ability to find a thought partner, it can be difficult —and for females—it can be almost impossible.
As I meet with others now, I often share these findings as a means of awareness. Some do not readily acknowledge the challenges associated with women in leadership. If we want to keep or potentially grow in this space, we need to be willing to mentor and support.
